Winner of the 2015 People’s Choice Award, Sue Flavell’s ‘Shimmer’ has since been┬ácast in bronze and is making its way from Perth to Fremantle in preparation for this year’s show, where the the celebrated West Australian artist will reveal another insight into her imaginative world.

With a keen interest in the subconscious and the mythological, much of her work draws on animal forms and symbols. The practice of placing sculptures in tombs, or on display on the mantelpiece, is a key factor in her choice to use clay. Working in ceramics, she says, is also like a present to yourself – the materials are transformed and you never know what you will get. There is a richness to the material, which offers endless possibilities.

In an interesting contrast to the idea of clay objects as luxury items, Flavell also incorporates kitsch elements found at op shops, swap meets, or on the street. The play of materials, forms and associations leads to new things, as if brought up from the subconscious. This is a contemporary practice with threads reaching out into time and space.
