Paul Kaptein is a Perth-based artist working primarily in sculpture and drawing.
Since 2012 he has principally worked with hand carved sculptural forms that in the process of making, resist immediacy and seek to collapse distinctions between ancient and contemporary practice.
In 2014 Kaptein won the prestigious Mandorla Art Award and the Mid West Art Prize in 2015.
His work can be found in the collections of The University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University, Royal Perth Hospital, New Norcia Museum Art Collection, City of Wanneroo, The Horn Collection as well as significant private national and international collections.
In 2015 Kaptein undertook a 2 month residency at Sculpture Space (Utica, NY, USA) which informed a 2 person show at Krause Gallery (NYC). In 2016 his work was featured in the Scope Art Fair in New York, and later exhibited in Paris with Misia Gallery.
The work in this exhibition is a continuing investigation into the body occupying the fluid space between form and emptiness.
